Youth Advisor Position

Active mid-size congregation seeks an energetic and engaging Youth Advisor to lead two large youth programs at The First Church in Belmont , Massachusetts .  This professional 30-hour/week position requires someone who cares deeply about our youth and is committed to running safe welcoming programs that encompass socializing, social action, education, leadership development, and worship.  The Youth Advisor is an integral member of a dedicated church staff to a 400-member congregation with two Sunday worship services.  Our Youth Group (grades 10-12) has 50+ enthusiastic members and our Coming of Age program (9th grade) has 15+ members with 7 adult mentors.  The Youth Advisor works closely with a Youth Group Assistant and Youth Advisory Committee (YAC).


Core responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Youth Group

  • Plan, organize and facilitate weekly Sunday evening Youth Group (YG) meetings; attend YAC meetings
  • Arrange periodic service and fundraising projects, supervise overnight retreats
  • Prepare annual spring YG worship service
  • Coordinate logistics and plans for a week-long service opportunity trip which takes place every other year
  • Attend Mass Bay District meetings and trainings for Youth Advisors
  • Recruit and inspire parent volunteers for trips and projects, and provide weekly communication with YG members


Coming of Age Program

  • Curriculum preparation for full COA program, including special fall and spring projects
  • Attend and facilitate weekly Sunday morning COA meetings
  • Prepare annual spring COA worship service
  • Coordinate and plan overnight retreats
  • Recruit and inspire adult mentors and provide weekly communication with COA members and parents


 
Other

  • Attend weekly Tuesday morning church staff meetings
  • Write bi-monthly church column
  • Provide pastoral care when needed
  • Prepare budgets and annual reports on YG and COA programs


Qualifications:

  • Experience in working with high school-age Youth
  • Support UU principles and values
  • Enthusiasm, patience and a sense of humor
  • Strong facilitation, communication and listening skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively with good organizational skills

The Youth Advisor has flexible hours though you are expected to attend the scheduled weekly YG, COA and staff meetings, and to attend Sunday worship services and coffee hours when possible.  This position will begin in August 2008.  The church calendar year is September through June.  Salary is based on UUA guidelines commensurate with experience.  A benefits package will be negotiated as part of the hiring process.
