About The Event

We invite yout to watch the film on your own and join us for the discussion the third Saturday of every month from 7:30-9pm. This is not an expert-run group, but rather a facilitated group of movie-watchers interested in educating themselves.

1/20/24 -RESPECT (2021). Biopic. Following the rise of Aretha Franklin's career from a child singing in her father's church's choir to her international superstardom, RESPECT is the remarkable true story of the music icon's journey to find her voice. Director: Liesl Tommy. IMDB rating: 6.6. Amazon, Apple TV.

2/17/24 - Lovecraft Country (2020). Series. “Rewind 1921” - Tulsa massacre episode. Max.

3/16/25 - Gather (2020). Documentary.  An intimate portrait of a growing movement amongst Indigenous Americans to reclaim their spiritual and cultural identities through food sovereignty. Director: Sanjay Rawal. IMDB rating 7.8. Netflix.

4/20/24 - Minari  (2020). Film. A semi-autobiographical take on Chung’s upbringing, the plot follows a family of South Korean immigrants who try to make it in the rural United States during the 1980s. Written and directed by Lee Isaac Chung. RT 98%. Apple TV, Amazon.

5/18/24 - Is That Black Enough for You?!? (2022) is a documentary film about the history, craft, and legacy of African-American cinema. Netflix.

6/15/24 - Story Ave (2023) - South Bronx teen Kadir (Asante Blackk) is a gifted visual artist who loses his way following the death of his younger brother. Overcome with grief and struggling with the pressures of school and family, he escapes into the thrilling yet dangerous world of graffiti gangs. To prove himself and join his neighborhood's ruling gang, Kadir tries to rob no-nonsense MTA conductor Luis (Luis Guzmán), but is caught off guard when Luis agrees to give Kadir cash if he'll sit down to have a meal with him. Following their conversation and the delicate, transformative friendship that grows out of it, Kadir sees for the first time how his artistic talent could lead to a better life.
