  • “Which Side?: Protest Music, Past, Present, and Future." A Lecture with James SullivanThu, Jan 29 · Parish Hall

“Which Side?: Protest Music, Past, Present, and Future." A Lecture with James Sullivan January 29 · 7:00 PM · Parish Hall Join us for an engaging, multimedia lecture with James Sullivan, author of " Which Side Are You On? 20th Century American History in 100 Protest Songs " (2019). Sullivan will explore how protest music—often dismissed as blunt or preachy—has shaped American culture, from anti-war and pro-labor songs to civil rights anthems. These songs have given voice to a nation’s struggles and challenged listeners to take a stand by asking, “Which side are you on?” This free event is co-sponsored by FCB’s Social Action and Adult Programs Committees, along with Second Friday Concerts. To attend, please register here . Join us for an engaging evening with James Sullivan, author of Which Side Are You On? 20th Century American History in 100 Protest Songs, published in 2019. "Protest" music is largely perceived as an unsubtle art form, a topical brand of songwriting that preaches to the converted. But popular music of all types has long given listeners food for thought, including anti-war and pro-labor songs, as well as civil rights anthems. Mr. Sullivan will discuss how protest songs have given voice to the needs and challenges of a nation and asked its citizens to take a stand by asking the question, "Which side are you on?” Mr. Sullivan is a longtime arts and culture reporter for the Boston Globe and the author of five books. A former editor for Rolling Stone and a former staff writer for the San Francisco Chronicle, Sullivan teaches journalism at Emerson College, serves as program director for the Newburyport Documentary Film Festival, and is co-curator of the concert series "Which Side? A Protest Music Teachout." This free event is co-sponsored by FCB’s Social Action and Adult Programs Committees, along with Second Friday Concerts.
